Organisation is a big key to learning at school. Disorganisation can mean missed learning. This is something we are currently discovering. When a child struggles to stay organised in the classroom, they can also struggle to stay focused and therefore learn.
Organisation in some children is better than others. Some thrive on knowing what is happening now and what’s coming next. They listen intently to stay focused. They understand, they remember their reading books, spelling books and homework. This is fantastic, but how many children are able to be that organised? I know I have one child who isn’t.
My child has always been a little disorganised and frequently used to forget and lose jumpers and water bottles etc in school. However, it seems to be getting worse, rather than better.
This lack of organisation is affecting learning. My child frequently forgets homework books and reading books, which means he is unable to complete it. Yes, when these are forgotten, my child does still read his own books, but they are not necessarily at the correct level. Homework does eventually get done, when the homework book finds its way home late, but is then often rushed.
This cannot be a good way to learn. Now it also seems to be affecting focus in school too. My child tells me how easily he is distracted and doesn’t understand things. He knows he is not able to organise himself. It is starting to worry him.
It is very difficult to watch all this from home. I can only do so much to help. I remind him of things before he goes to school, but I can’t do it for him. He needs to learn some organisation and focus. I have asked the school if he could have help with organisation, but nothing seems to have happened. It seems as soon as children hit Yr3 they are expected to be able to organise themselves.
I agree, most should be by now, however, what happens to those children who are not ready for this? Are they then just expected to struggle on by themselves, forgetting reading, homework and letters? How is that going to teach them?
This is something I have been trying to work out this week, but still don’t have an answer for. How do you teach children to be organised, stay focused and remember things?
