The modern blouse: A girl’s best friend ~ a guest post.
While blouses may have once been seen as old-fashioned, they’re now a modern day style staple, a go to for any occasion. Beautiful blouses can transcend seasons and be dressed up or down for every situation, meaning they are the best investment pieces you can buy. Everyone from Caroline Flack to Kate Moss, to Rosie Huntington-Whitley and Rihanna have been spotted in printed or sheer blouses this season. Here are our favourite ways to wear this autumn’s styles to take you from day to night.
For the school run
Getting the kids fed, dressed and out of the door with their packed lunch, homework and the right PE, karate or swimming kit for the day usually feels like something akin to trying to nail jelly to a wall. So, cutting down on getting ready time for you helps enormously. A blouse is a throw-on piece but one which looks very put together. Wear with your favourite ripped skinny jeans and ballet flats or boyfriend jeans and converse for instant yummy mummy style.
With a nod to this season’s tartan trends, Ralph Lauren’s Denim and Supply checked shirt from La Redoute’s blouse selection is perfect for throwing over skinny coloured jeans. When it gets really cold, you can layer with some chunky cream knits. Wear with this season’s tan suede ankle boots, or add a touch of sex appeal with Phillip Lim’s stacked heel, over the knee boots.
Buying a selection of blouses can give you a working wardrobe which lasts the whole week. You can wear with pencil skirts or wide-legged trousers for a look which is professional and stylish. This autumn/winter, one of the big trends is dark florals, taking a look which is usually associated with summer and giving it a twist. Vivienne Westwood showcased blouses with retro-style flowers against dark backgrounds while Etro opted for brighter flowers in flowing silks.
The right blouse can have serious sex appeal for a dinner date. Leather is one of this season’s key styles, but it can be a difficult look to pull off to make sure you exude sex appeal in a way which is classy, never tarty. American actress Alyssa Milano managed to get it exactly right at New York Fashion Week, teaming a cream blouse with a large pussy bow with a leather skater style skirt. She even managed to add another autumn trend with the leopard print accents on her shoes.
For retail therapy
A blouse is also ideal when you’re shopping for new clothes as it’s easy to wear, and easy to change in and out of when you’re trying on potential new outfits. Wear with comfortable flats, like a pair of brogues in two-tone, or with a feminine lacy twist. You can add a satchel style cross-body bag so you have your hands free for searching the rails for bargains.
So, there you have it, a blouse truly is the most hardworking item in any woman’s wardrobe.
