Body Piercings

By Katie — November 09, 2012

Last weekend I did something that many people probably find strange/ridiculous/disgusting… (delete as appropriate!) I had my hand pierced.

Before I go any further, I need to explain it’s not like an ear or belly button piercing, it doesn’t go all the way through, just to remove the image of having a giant hoop in my hand! It’s a tiny, round sparkly “stud” which sits flat against the back of my hand. A small hole was made, using what I can only describe as miniature apple corer, taking out the flesh, then a flat piece of metal(?) was inserted. It has holes in either side so when the tissue regrows, it will grow through the holes and attach itself in place. I’m really selling this to you aren’t I…?

I have to keep it covered up for a week and a half, and clean it daily with salt water, but apart from that and some bruising, it’s been pretty pain free* and when I take the plaster off to air & clean it, it looks soooo pretty. I was toying with the idea of a new tattoo but this is something different, and I hate to follow the crowd!

Maybe I’m getting too old (or should be too sensible, one or the other) and I’m sure the piercer was surprised to see a grown woman with 2 kids in the shop, but who cares? I may have to pretend to be sensible and grown up but I’m really not, and while I’m still young, even it’s in my head, I’ll carry on regardless, and next week I will be showing off my lovely new dermal piercing to anyone who wants to look!

Oh, and just for the record, there are no other piercings anywhere on my body, apart from the ears (several have closed up) the belly button was pierced pre kids and I have always been just too damn chicken to get anything else done.

*touch wood

I well believe you! I'm already wondering if I could have one in one of my tattoos on the back on my neck!

Although it's really not my thing, I can totally see the appeal if that makes any sense?! I can't wait to see it once it has all settled down and healed :-)

It's taking it's time to heal and I'm still VERY cautious about anyone going near it, but it's so sparkly, I love it!
