Autumn style preview ~SP
2012 is well underway, and so far in the fashion world we have seen some exciting trends. The revival of denim, wedges, neon colours and puffer jackets has breathed a bit of 90s brashness into these austere times. There has also been a lean towards well-tailored smart wear such as peplum dresses, platform shoes and glam accessories. Summer has, more or less, been a write-off, so let’s look at what to expect from the high street this autumn.
Baroque/Ornate
Minimalism has been particularly popular in recent fashion, so many designers are choosing the opposite path for Autumn 2012. Drawing from the complexity often associated with the Baroque movement, runways have been showered with lavish details, heavy ornamentation and impressively wrought details. Whether it is embroidery, tapestry or gold leaf, this trend takes its cues from all things ornate.
Tartan/Plaid
Tartan and plaid are consistent classic style choices, but there are seasons when tartan and plaid are more popular than usual – autumn 2012 is one of them. This style is popular in subtle variations alongside androgynous and school girl variations.
Ripped Denim
Usually associated with grunge, ripped denim is back in street style in a number of new variations, from jeans to jackets and shirts; ripped denim can be dressed up or down to suit any style or outfit.
Androgynous
A niche autumn 2012 fashion trend is androgynous fashion. Some women might not be too comfortable wearing it but expect to see it trickling into popular stores as well as boutiques fairly quickly. There may be a lot of resistance to this fashion trend inspired by menswear, but if it has been done before, it will be done again!
Plus Size
With an increasing awareness to different shapes and sizes of women within fashion, the industry is giving considerable attention to the importance and success of plus size fashion. Ladies plus size coats, fitted dresses and trousers are going to be particularly popular this Autumn, so be sure to check out shops such as Curvissa plus size clothing for some great style pieces.
Peplums
This seasons experimented with silhouettes in women’s fashion with androgynous and plus size, so it is no surprise to see peplums in autumn 2012 fashions. Peplums are no longer just available in dress form – peplum skirts, tops and jackets are also becoming increasingly popular – giving you the option to mix and match your outfits perfectly.
Florals
Bold florals will be integrated into lots of different styles and garments this autumn, which will be a welcome addition to those wanting to integrate their so-far-underutilised summer wardrobe.
Florals were big in maxi dresses and skirts this summer, expect them to be used with blazers, trousers and shirts in the autumn seasons to add a feminine element to any outfit.
Leather
Leather is about to make a big come back this year. Use a leather jacket to add a casual, grunge element to an otherwise feminine outfit, or use leather trousers with boots then heels to carry your outfit from day time to evening. You will be sure to find lots of leather statement garments to add to your wardrobe.
